Historical Event
Before May 31, 1921, the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma was known as "Black Wall Street". It was the richest African-American neighborhood in North America. Due to a misunderstood elevator incident, 1,500 armed white men stormed "Black Wall Street": setting fire to 1,256 houses, looting 215 businesses, and murdering many unarmed people in cold blood. Not a single one of these people was ever charged-or even arrested, although over 6,000 African-Americans were. In 18 hours nearly 300 Black people were killed and over 8,000 were displaced; and yet the news papers read "Two Whites Dead in Race Riot". This is a perfect example of systemic racism, and the fact that I, in my 11 years of public schooling have never even heard this mentioned proves that our education system still has a long, long way to go. |
Animal
In the 1930s-1970s wild mustangs and burros on U.S. land were rounded up and brutally slaughtered for dog food. Velma B. Johnson, better known as Wild Horse Annie campaigned for decades until The Wild Horse Annie Act, and latter the wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act was passed, which charged the Bureau of Land Management with protecting, managing, and America's wild horses and donkeys. While this is far from perfect, Wild Horse Annie almost completely eliminated the slaughter of mustangs and over 250,000 have been placed into homes since the act was passed in 1971.

Travel:
This image depicts several orphaned elephants from the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust in Nairobi, Kenya: the largest and most well-known elephant orphanage. The stark contrast between the elephants and background, as well as the sharpness makes this a very eye-appealing photo. |
Sports
Elisa Wallace has arguably been the most influential person in BLM mustang promotion and adoption. She is a 5 star (best of the best) eventer who has qualified as a reserve for the Olympics. In 2012, she decided to compete in an Extreme Mustang Makeover, where competitors have ~100 days to train a wild mustang. Not only was she riding on day 1, she won the competition with a bareback, bridleless freestyle. In the 9 years since then she has worked endlessly to train and promote BLM mustangs. |
Personal:
While this photo would not win any awards, it is very special to me. When I was 14 with no horse training experience I adopted a completely wild mustang. Since then, I have been his one and only trainer. This photo depicts his first trail ride: bareback in a rope halter: something many high-level horses can't do. It really shows the trust and bond we've acquired over the past 2 years.

Landscape:
This photo is one of the first, and in my opinion one of the best landscape photographs. The stark contrast between the bright mountain and dark foreground and background, sharpness, and near perfect use of the rule of thirds make this an excellent photo. The fact that it's black and white just adds to the photo's brilliance. |
Current Event:
Climate change is already having a negative impact on over 700 endangered species (including elephants), and this number is just rising. The Earth's delicate ecosystem is at a breaking point, unless something major significantly changes it will be damaged beyond repair. This photo nearly perfectly exemplifies the rule of thirds and is very nice overall. |
Portrait:
Jane Goodall has been one of the most influential people in the animal world of any time. She was basically a scientist without any scientific training- so instead of giving the animals numbers, she gave them names; instead of referring to the animals as nothing more than savage, dumb creatures who had no thoughts, only instinct; she talked of their individual personalities and intelligence in awe. |
Politics:
There have been 46 presidents in the history of this country, and 45 of them have had 1 thing in common: they were white men. 50.8% of this country is female, and 39.7% is a minority and yet not one of them had ever been elected before President Obama. His 8 year stay in office not only brought out the racists, but it inspired many people. |
